Background of the study
Social change, driven by modernization, globalization, and urbanization, plays a significant role in shaping the evolution of language. In Abeokuta, the Yoruba language is undergoing semantic evolution as new social realities alter the meanings of traditional words and expressions. This study examines how shifts in social structures, economic conditions, and cultural practices influence semantic change in Yoruba. Field interviews, media analysis, and historical comparisons reveal that many Yoruba lexical items have expanded or shifted in meaning to accommodate contemporary experiences, while others have retained their traditional connotations (Afolabi, 2023). Researchers argue that such semantic evolution reflects the dynamic interaction between language and society, where language adapts to express emerging concepts and phenomena. By mapping these semantic shifts, the study aims to provide insights into the mechanisms of language change and contribute to the preservation of cultural identity amid modernization. It also discusses the implications for language education and policy, highlighting the need to balance innovation with cultural continuity (Ogunyemi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although social change is widely acknowledged as a driver of semantic evolution, there is limited systematic research on how these changes manifest in the Yoruba language in Abeokuta. Preliminary observations indicate that certain traditional meanings are being altered, potentially leading to communication challenges and loss of cultural heritage (Eze, 2023). This study seeks to document these changes and analyze their impact on language use.
Objectives of the study

  • To document semantic shifts in Yoruba in Abeokuta.
  • To analyze the social factors driving these changes.
  • To assess the impact of semantic evolution on cultural identity.
    Research questions
  • What semantic changes are occurring in Yoruba due to social change?
  • How do social factors influence these changes?
  • What are the implications for preserving cultural identity?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it elucidates the relationship between social change and semantic evolution in Yoruba. Its findings will inform language educators and policymakers about maintaining linguistic heritage while embracing modernization (Adebayo, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing semantic evolution in Yoruba in Abeokuta. It does not cover other aspects of language or other regions.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Evolution: The change in word meanings over time.
  • Yoruba Language: An indigenous language spoken in southwestern Nigeria.
  • Social Change: Transformations in societal structures and cultural norms.
